Social Action Projects
Common Ground Nashville
In our March 1st meeting, we addressed an important issue facing our country---Guns in America. In our three discussion groups, we learned about our own personal relationships with guns and those of others, the issues driving the gun debate, and our latest feelings about schools and guns. As a diverse group, we found some common ground: we all acknowledged that this is a real problem in America and, in taking an even broader view, we reflected on the role of violence in general in our society. Many of us left that session with alternative sources of information, some clarifying understandings, glimpses into other viewpoints, and more questions related to: “So What’s Next?”
What’s next at Common Ground Nashville is to continue our journey of understanding and to become informed on other ways in which we can get information or, more importantly-- take action if we choose to do so. While we will not normally spend several sessions on a single issue, our April meeting will afford us this opportunity. We will learn about some local gun-related groups or experts operating in Nashville and their beliefs and solutions. We will have time to discuss our questions and thoughts with some of them and with each other via our always-meaningful discussions!
Remember, join us at Congregation Micah on APRIL 5, 2018. We begin at 6:30 PM with a light dinner and discussion at 7 PM.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle TN - Food Drive
- 1 in 6 Tennesseans struggle with hunger
- 46 counties throughout Middle and West Tennessee are served by Second Harvest Food Bank
- 394,860 people in Middle TN do not know where their next meal is coming from
With these and more numbers in mind, and with a duty to serve the people around us, Micah has chosen to hold a continuous food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank. You can bring items to our office during regular office hours and before/after services.
Room in the Inn is a national program that provides food and shelter for the homeless in houses of worship throughout participating cities in the United States. For the past 11 years, Congregation Micah has been an active participant in the program. On the third Sunday of the month from November through March we host 14 men. The guests are served dinner, sleep overnight and are provided a breakfast the following morning.
The program is a chance for families and individuals to participate in the myriad of tasks that are available including preparation of food, helping with setup and serving the evening meal, setting up the sleeping area, and last but not least, overnighting as hosts with our guests.
We will be hosting the following nights for the 2017/18 winter season:
- February 18, 2018
- March 18, 2018
Unable to volunteer? We are always in need of cold weather adult mens clothing, tooth brushes, toothpaste, shampoo and soap. Bring the items into the Micah office and they will get to us for distribution.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH ALL OF YOU DURING THE 2017-18 SEASON.
