Frequently Asked Questions
About Bar & Bat Mitzvahs at Micah

Do I have a choice of flowers?

Yes. Flower arrangements are optional and may be provided by the Bar or Bat Mitzvah family.

What about ushers?

Friday night Shabbat service ushers are provided by the Congregation. Saturday's ushers may be selected by you.

What about pictures?

Videotaping - One camera may be stationed on a tripod in the back, center, of the sanctuary. No video equipment or personnel will be permitted in any other part of the room.

Photography - One photo may be taken in the sanctuary during religious services. NO FLASH IS PERMITTED. No photographer is permitted, at any time during the service, to stand in any aisle. We will provide time for photography before and after the service.

Are there fees?

The Rabbi does not require a fee. Many Bar/Bat Mitzvah families make a contribution to the Rabbi's Discretionary fund. Use of Congregation Micah for your reception does require a fee; please see the Executive Director for details. Congregational dues must be current when your child becomes a Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

Some of our guests are not Jewish. How will they know what's going on?

The Rabbi is sensitive to our guests and will explain the meaning of the Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony. The Rabbi will also invite guests to view the Torah on the pulpit.

Will staff members come to the reception?

If you invite the staff, including the Rabbi, treat them as you would any other guest. Staff will only attend your reception if they are invited to do so, and will RSVP the same as your other guests.

How long will services last?

Services that include a Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony generally last about one and a half hours on Saturday mornings or afternoon Havdalah services.

What is the Haftarah?

The Haftarah is a passage from another part of the Bible, (other then Torah), usually from a Prophet, sometimes from one of the narrative books like Kings, Judges or Samuel. Every Torah portion has a corresponding Haftarah.

What is a Havdalah Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

Havdalah means "separation". Havdalah is the ceremony that separates Shabbat from the rest of the week. At a Havdalah Bar or Bat Mitzvah, we do an afternoon Shabbat service including a regular Torah service. After the Torah is put back in the ark, we conclude the service by doing Havdalah.

May I wear a kippah (yarmulke) and tallit (tallis)? And where can I get them?

Both boys and girls may wear a kippah and/or tallit, if that is your desire. You may order a tallit and kippah from the Micah Judaica Shop. Please contact the Micah office to arrange an appointment or see them during regular Gift Shop hours.

If I cannot find the answers to my questions in this handbook, with whom may I speak?

Feel free to call the synagogue office at 377-9799 to speak with the Rabbi or the Executive Director.
